Ormiston Gorge with Kids (Central Australia)
Imagine swimming in a waterhole, surrounded by nature, with the stunning MacDonnell ranges as your backdrop. There is plenty of sand and rocks to scramble over for the kids, as well as plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities. Sound perfect? It is!
Ormiston Gorge can easily be reached in a standard vehicle on a day trip from Alice Springs. I visited on a self drive camping trip with my husband and kids when traveling from Alice Springs to Uluru via the ‘alternative’ way.

The scenery here is truly breathtaking, and was one of my favourite places to visit in Central Australia. It is very serene and relaxing. I even saw a few people settled in with a thick book and towel….just like at the beach, but even better!
Ormiston Gorge is free to visit and is located in the West Macdonnell National Park. It is approximately 135 km from Alice Springs. You follow Larapinta Drive west out of Alice Springs and turn right onto Namatjira Drive. When you get to the intersection, follow the road until you see the signs for Ormiston Gorge.
There is a campground here and a kiosk that was doing a roaring trade in ice-creams. If you enjoy hiking, there is a 3.5 hour ‘pound walk’, and Ormiston Gorge is also a junction on the Larapinta trail.
You can also camp here, which I can’t wait to come back again and do! There are toilets, showers and BBQ’s, however I’m told it’s first in first served.
In general, Ormiston Gorge is a MUST SEE when travelling around Central Australia with kids.
