Ormiston Gorge with Kids

Ormiston Gorge with Kids

Imagine swimming in a waterhole, surrounded by nature, with the stunning West MacDonnell ranges as your backdrop.  There is plenty of sand and rocks to scramble over for the kids, as well as plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities.  Sound perfect? It is!

I visited Ormiston Gorge with my husband and young kids on a Central Australian road camping trip.  See the route we followed here: Central Australia Road Trip With Kids (The Route We Took)

Ormiston Gorge with Kids

The scenery here is truly breathtaking.  Visiting Ormiston Gorge with kids was one of my favourite things to do in Central Australia.  The gorge is incredibly serene and relaxing, and I even saw a few people settled in on their towels with a thick book.

Ormiston Gorge is free to visit and if you wish to stay overnight, camping is available at a reasonable price.  Camping facilities include toilets, showers and BBQ’s but it’s first in first served. There is also a kiosk available that was doing a roaring trade in ice-creams.

If you enjoy hiking, there is the 3.5 hour ‘pound walk’.  Ormiston Gorge is also a junction on the Larapinta trail.

Ripley (Mr nearly 4) LOVED this place. He really found his confidence and feet scrambling over the rocks.

In general, Ormiston Gorge is a MUST SEE when travelling around Central Australia with kids.
