Easy ways to travel in Hawaii (Oahu) with kids
Travelling with kids comes with challenges. One of these challenges is working out how you are going to get everyone from A to B with minimal fuss. Luckily, Oahu is a modern island with good roads, footpaths and a reliable bus service. This makes getting around with kids just that little bit easier.
Walking is fantastic in Oahu, especially in Waikiki where everything is close by. You will need other transport to see the rest of the island. I used the Ergo Baby Carrier here a lot, however these days I tend to use the Piggy Back Carrier. See my baby and toddler carriers for travelling section. You could easily use a pram or stroller around Waikiki, except on the beach of course. You can also hire any kiddy/baby equipment you might need here. See my post on Hiring baby and toddler equipment in Hawaii post for more information.
Taxi hire is easy here, you can flag one down at taxi ranks in the city or phone and book. I didn’t get any hint of ”scamming” that is notorious in other countries. The prices were comparable to back home in Australia and they used a meter.
Hiring a car is useful with kids here. Even though I’m used to driving on the left, I felt comfortable driving on the right side here. It’s very convenient being able to explore the whole island at your own pace. Avis has a car yard close to the airport and they also hire baby seats.
The Waikiki Trolley is a hop off / hop on tourist bus that visits a lot of the major tourist attractions. It’s a bright double decker and you can’t miss it!
O’ahu is not that big as far as islands go, so the bus services the whole island. You can actually buy a 4 day pass which is good value if you will be using the bus a few times a day. I actually love taking the bus in new countries as you get a chance to have a chat with the locals and the kids are a great icebreaker.
